A historic breakthrough in cancer treatment.
Merck and Moderna’s personalised mRNA cancer vaccine has succeeded in a large Phase 3 trial, the final major testing stage before regulatory approval.
The treatment was given to 1,137 people whose high-risk melanoma had already been surgically removed. Scientists analysed each patient’s tumour and created a unique vaccine that effectively gives the immune system a “wanted poster” of that individual cancer.
Combined with the existing immunotherapy Keytruda, it kept patients cancer-free for longer and reduced the likelihood of the disease spreading compared with Keytruda alone.
This is the first personalised mRNA cancer treatment ever to succeed in a Phase 3 trial.
That matters far beyond melanoma: if the same approach works in ongoing trials for lung, bladder, kidney and other cancers, doctors may eventually be able to manufacture a vaccine specifically targeting each patient’s tumour.
